A torus is the convex portion of the upper part of the base of a Greek column and resembles the appearance of the cortical buckling seen in the "column" of bone which has been fractured in the pattern discussed in this article. In adults, the commonest form of torus fracture by far is a buckle fracture of the ribs. These type of fractures are more common in children, especially aged 5-10 years, due to the elasticity of their bones. The term torus is the Latin word meaning protuberance. Rarely, a torus fracture may refer to the fracture of an oral torus, and there is potential for the two terms to be confused 10. Sometimes a cast may be applied, but often a splint is all that is required with a period of rest and immobilisation. They are self-limiting and typically do not require operative intervention, although a manipulation may be required if the angulation is severe. In some cases, angulation is the only diagnostic clue Subtle deformity or buckle of the cortex may be evident This most commonly occurs at the distal radius or tibia following a fall on an outstretched arm the force is transmitted from carpus to the distal radius and the point of least resistance fractures, usually the dorsal cortex of the distal radius. Your doctor can give you a more specific timeline based on your injury and overall health.Cortical buckle fractures occur when there is axial loading of a long bone. Rehabilitation can help, but it can take several months or longer for complete healing. You might also feel lingering stiffness for up to two years. After your cast or splint is removed, you'll likely need rehabilitation exercises or physical therapy to reduce stiffness and restore movement in your wrist. Keep in mind that full recovery can take a year or more, especially for more severe wrist injuries. You can start working your way back up to your previous activity level within about three to six months, depending on your injury. They may require simple pain relief medicines, these can be purchased over the counter at a pharmacy. This is normal and should settle down within a few days. Once the cast is off, it’ll be about one or two months before you can return to low-impact physical activities, such as swimming. 1 Pain and discomfort When moving their wrist in the next few weeks your child may complain of mild stifness and aching. Depending on the extent of the fracture, you might need to keep the cast on for a few weeks or a couple of months. Your doctor will likely follow up with regular X-rays every few weeks to get an idea of how things are healing. You may need a new cast if it starts to feel loose after the swelling subsides.įor more severe fractures requiring surgery, you’ll go straight into a cast after the procedure. The splint protects the bone and allows it to heal. If you need a cast, it’ll stay on for a few weeks while the swelling continues to go down and the bone heals. Buckle fractures heal quickly with a splint. Metacarpal fractures are common injuries. 2,3 Data from eight randomized control trials conducted in the UK. These fractures heal very well with very low rates of displacement. The cosmetic and functional prognosis of this fracture is excellent even if it associated with an ulnar buckle/styloid fracture. Buckle fractures are the most common wrist fractures in children, usually. Figure 1: Buckle Fracture of the Distal Radius. You can feel your metacarpals by pressing on the back of your hand. Buckle fractures of the distal radius represent about 50 of pediatric fractures of the wrist. ![]() Your metacarpals are the bones in your hand that connect your thumb and finger bones (your phalanges) to your wrist. ![]() Its normal to have aches and discomfort beyond this. You may need to wear a splint to prevent your wrist from moving too much during this time. A metacarpal fracture is a type of bone fracture (broken bone). After a wrist fracture, most of the healing happens between 6 to 12 weeks. There is no deformity in the wrist, which means the wrist will not be out of its. The wrist may be tender, slightly swollen, and painful to move. The bone will have a very small fracture, which is so minor that it may be difficult to see on X-ray. Who is at risk of buckle fractures Children are particularly susceptible to buckle. Generally, you’ll have swelling in your outer wrist for a few days. A buckle injury of the wrist is a small area of compressed bone. It can take up to 6 weeks for a child to heal from a buckle fracture, and longer for an adult. The healing time associated with an ulnar styloid fracture depends on how severe the fracture is and whether any other bones were fractured.
